Yaz Stroke Risk

One of the serious risks with Yasmin and Yaz birth control and other fourth-generation contraceptives is the increased chance of developing a blood clot which can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Yaz strokes side effects occur when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. During a stroke brain cells in the area start to die because they are prevented from receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic stroke (caused by blockage) and hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding).  Yaz and Yasmin stroke problems may be linked to the drospirenone hormone that is combined with estrogen in the pill. No long-term studies have been conducted regarding this new synthetic hormone.

Ischemic Strokes

A serious problem with Yaz and other newer combination hormone contraceptives is the increased risk of suffering an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes occur when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in the body and then subsequently breaks off and travels through the bloodstream. The blood clot can then lodge in the brain, lungs, heart or other areas. When the blood clot prevents the flow of blood to the heart or brain a stroke or heart attack can result leading to serious injuries or death. Ischemic strokes are the most common type with about 80% of all strokes being ischemic.

There are two types of blood clots that can cause an ischemic stroke:

  • Cerebral thrombus – a blood clot that stays in place in the brain
  • Embolism – blood clots that break loose and travel through the blood to the brain

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A second major cause of a stroke involves bleeding in the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes occur when small blood vessels become weak and burst inside the brain. The brain is very sensitive to bleeding and damage can occur very rapidly. Bleeding irritates the brain tissue, causing swelling. Bleeding collects into a mass called a hematoma. Bleeding also increases pressure on the brain and presses it against the skull.

The following symptoms may indicate a Yaz and stroke warning:

•        loss of coordination
